Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, has donated relief materials to the indigenes of flood affect community in
Amaogwugwu community in Umuahia North Local Government and other Communities in Aba South Local Government in Abia state.
Speaking while making the Donations in Umuahia the state capital on Monday the Director General of NIMASA, DR Dakuku Peterside, said the donation to the affected communities was intended to help them cushion the effects of the floodings they suffered during the 2019 rainy season.
Peterside who was represented by the Director of internal audit NIMASA, Mr Onuzuruike, noted that his office recieved several letters for assistance from Senator Theodore Orji, coupled with newspaper reports about the bad conditions of some Abia communities during the rainy season.
"This donation is to assure you that the Federal government is aware of your plight. Please ensure that the items are amicably shared to the victims.
"The donation can not replace all that you have lost to the floodings, but they would cushion the effects of the disaster and help you return to life again", he said.
The executive Secretary Abia State Emergency Agency , Mr Sunny Jackson expressed profound appreciation to NIMASA for remembering communities affected by flooding in the state.
He commended NIMASA for adding empowerment materials to the relief sent to the state.
He further appealed for support from the office of the Secret to the State government and the State's ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to come to the aid the affected communities.
The state Commisioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Chief Gabriel Onyendilafu, commended NIMASA for the aid sent to the state.
The leaders of the affected communities, Mr Emeka Chukwu of Amaogwugwu autonomous community, Umuahia North LGA and Barrister Ekpem Kelechi of Aba South LGA extolled the maritime management agency for coming to their aid.
They noted that their means of livelihood were destroyed by the rampaging flood of 2019 and promised to ensure judicious distribution of the donated relief materials.
The President General of Amaogwugwu autonomous community, Ohuhu in Umuahia North LGA, pleaded that the cause of foodling in his area should be checked.
He alleged that an uncompleted Degrading of a river by the Niger Delta Development Commision was responsible for the flooding in his community.
Some of the items donated to the Communities includes bags of rice, bags of beans, cartons of indomie noodles, sewing machines and grinding machines etc.
