Workers welfare is our priority- Abia NLC


 





The chairman Nigeria Labour Congress, Abia state Council Mr Uchenna Obigwe, has said the union would contiue to pursue the Welfare of workers in all its interface with the Government of the day. 


He spoke in Umuahia the state capital on Saturday while addressing members of the union in a low key ceremony to mark the year 2021 workers day celebration.


He said the low key celebration became necessary because of the security threats across the country and the need to control crowd effectively to avoid the transmission of Covid-19, adding that affiliates unions under the state NLC were told to Mark the day in their respective offices.


He pointed out that the real essence of the workers day celebration was ensuring that every workers in the state gets his/her wages as at when due, adding that the NLC will not fold its hands and watch workers go hungry without their pay.


He said, "Workers are human beings and when you pay them their salaries they will make purchases thereby driving the economic wheels of the state.


"But if they are not paid they can't contribute meaningfully well to the growth of the state's economy.


"We commend Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, for making the salaries of workers in the state score ministries regular.


"But we also urge him to extend his magnanimity to those in the  Abia state Polytechnics, Abia state College of Education Technical and Abia state universitity teaching hospital Aba.


"Our stand as a union has remain that Government must regard workers as partners in progress and not enemies".
