Covid-19: Police Batter Journalist In Abia, Steal Phones And Communication Gadgets Belonging To Him


The offensive against media professionals by security agents is obviously on the increase, this morning in Umuahia the capital of the Abia state, an AFNews (Abia Facts Newspaper) reporter was beaten up on his way to work for an unnamed offence.

Narrating his ordeal in the hands of policemen to the News Gazette Online,the AFNews reporter by name Thompson Nsisiongabasi said he was on his way to work today from Ahiaeke axis, when he got to Orpet junction in Umuahia, he saw people running not knowing that Police and Civil Defense officers have had a face off at the junction.

Police officers led by one Inspector Sunday Daniel rounded up Thompson and accused him of recording them, meanwhile Thompson’s phone was off since last night due to power failure.

He quickly identified himself as a journalist, but they ignored his identification and started beating him up with batons, sticks and clubs to the point that he began to bleed from the nose and parts of his body.

The police officers also went ahead confiscate his phones and other equipment belonging to him.

When a superior officer arrived, Thompson approached him and laid a complaint, the said Inspector Sunday Daniel acknowledged beating the journalist, but also denied collecting his gadgets.

The Online Media Practitioners hereby use this medium to call on the Commissioner of Police in Abia State to immediately investigate the matter and bring to book the dishonorable Inspector Sunday Daniel or we will seek a legal means to address the issue.
