The Abia State Ministry of Environment says it will conduct a wide scooping of drainage across Aba, Umuahia the state capital, Ohafia and other towns in the state.
The Permanent Secretary, Mr Iheanyi Ubani, made this public while speaking to journalists after a special statewide environmental sanitation exercise in Umuahia on Saturday.
Ubani, who was represented by the Door, Pollution Control and Environmental Waste, Mr Ikechukwu Ukeagu, pointed out that the exercise was sequel to a prediction by National Emergency and Management Agency (NEMA) that Abia would be among 28 states in the country that will be affected by flood.
He added that the state government had given the directive for the exercise, pointing out that the ministry and the Abia State Environmental and Protection Agency would spearhead the execution of the order.
According to Ubani, the ministry after conducting the exercise will appoint special task force to arrest those found blocking drainages in the state with refuse and charge them to mobile courts.
He commended Abia residents for responding to the call to the special environmental sanitation exercise which came a week earlier than the last Saturday of the month date of the clean up exercises, urging them not to relent in keeping their environments clean.
