Abia FRSC tasks commercial drivers, others on safety driving


 


 


Commercial drivers in Abia State has been charged to make their safety a priority while coveying  their passengers to their destination during the 2020 festive period.


The sector commander Federal Road Safety Corps Abia state sector Mr. Meshach Jatau stated this during the 2020 Ember months flag-off campaign in Umuahia the state capital.


He said the campaign was necessary to enlighten the drivers on the need to maintain safety tips while driving.


He pointed out that

the theme of the campaign ''Drive Safe, Stay Safe" was aptly chosen to reflect the current global challenge of the covid-19 where compliance to safety measures is a major factor in staying safe.


He revealed that the Ember month's safety campaign was conceived against the background of perennial traffic upsurge usually witnessed during festive seasons.


Jatau, urged those embarking on long distances journeys to check the mechanical efficiency of their vehicles before taking-off.


He said, "check your vehicle tyres,all tyres have expiry dates ; vehicle tyres are expected to expire after 4  years from the date of manufacture .


"Safety must be our basic concern so that we are not caught -up in avoidable road crashes "


"As we drive safely through to the New year ,I wish to enjoin all road users to remember to obey all traffic rules and regulations".


He urged the drivers to obtain their licenses from the standardized authorities and equally register their vehicles with the National Vehicles Inspection Scheme for their safety and security.


The State Commissioner for transport Chief Godswill Uche Nwanoruo, said the ministry would collaborate with FRSC to ensure the safety of road users in the state during festive period.


He advised drivers to desist from drinking before driving, adding that the state government will checkmate the sale of alcoholic beverages in motor parks.
