Law maker trains constituents in poultry farming Ogbonnaya Ikokwu, Umuahia


 


A physically challenged Power lifter Obioma Aligakwe, and one hundred others have benefited from the small holder poultry famers training and empowerment program organized by the member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/South federal constituency Chief Sam Onuigbo.


The beneficiaries who were drawn from the constituency were given one galvanized battery cage, three bags of feed, 60 point -of- lay birds and the sum of N20,000 as take off grants. 


In a statement while handling over the items to the beneficiarices in Umuahia the Abia state capital on Wednesday, Onuigbo, said the empowerment was prompted by the success stories coming from his constituents who benefited from its first phase.


He said the training was tailored towards providing an alternative source of livelihood to his constituents because of many years of unemployment.


The law maker who was represented by a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress in the state Chief Chidi Nwosu, charged the beneficiaries to be serious about the venture in order to replicate the gains of the program in a larger scale.


He said, "In your hands today is the key to commence the process of building a better future for yourselves and families.


"Do not take this lightly. Put in your best towards this so that in about a month's time you will begin to reap the benefits of your dedication and tenacity.


"Luckily for you the poultry industry is a booming one, with a large market including  household, diary companies and fast food operators as customers.


"With an annual demand of $1.39 billion of poultry products in Nigeria and this empowerment today, you have become part of that  large and lucrative industry, which the food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations rates as the second biggest in Africa".


The law maker appreciated the Federal Co-operative College, Oji River Enugu state for putting  the empowerment training together. 


In a remark Aligakwe, lauded the law maker for attracting the the training to the constituency adding that the venture will bring an additional source of income to the families of the beneficiaries.
