The governor of Abia State Okezie Ikpeazu, has said his administration introduced the rigid pavement technology in road construction to deliver roads that would outlive his administration.
Ikpeazu, who spoke on Saturday when he received a delegation of Abia online media practitioners association led by her chairman chief Paddy Anyatonwu, revealed that pawpaw and plantain trees where growing on Omuma and Osusu roads before his contractors started work on those roads.
He pointed out he introduced the rigid pavement technology, as a scientific respond to water having to staying on spot for a long time.
He said, "You can visit Omuma road phase 2, they are clearing that portion now, you will see pawpaw trees and other things flourishing on the road. That was how Osusu road was. If you want to work on Osusu, there’s no how you will put just laterite and overlay on the road and expect it to last for a long time.
"So we introduced the rigid cement technology and I can name the roads where it was used. One of them is the Umuola road which was commissed within the first 100 days of our stay in office. You can visit that road, if you see one pot whole on it come back and get one million baira from me.
"That road will last for 30 years for us. We didn't do it because we have cement to pour on the ground even as cement is hitting 6000 naira a bag we are still doing still doing rigid pavement because that's how
we can recover our cities.
"If I do only 10 roads, I expect my successor to start from road number 11 and with that, we can recover our roads instead of throwing away the State’s money".
