The Commissioner of Police in
Abia State Police Mustapha Mohammed Bala, has assured residents of the state that the police will ensure that the 2023 general elections will be peaceful, free, fair and devoid of violence.
Bala, gave the assurance when the new Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent Electoral Commission in the state Prof. Ike Uzochukwu, paid a courtesy visit to the CP in Umuahia the state capital.
Addressing journalists shortly after the visit the state Police Public Relations Officer Mr Geoffrey Ogbonna, said that the command is ready perform her lawful duties to ensure that security is adequately beefed up before, during and after the elections.
He added that INEC has both sensitive and none sensitive materials and stressed that there is the need to provide security for those sensitive materials in particular which the commissioner of police has assured police will.
He said, "The new REC paid a visit to the commissioner of police who is the chairman of the inter-agency consultative committee on election duties to inform him that a new REC he has assumed duties and solicited police synergy and cement the existing collaboration.
"The commissioner of police has assured him of the command's readiness to partner with them for the safety of all those sensitive materials to ensure that the forthcoming general elections are free, credible, fair and devoid of violence even before, during and after.
"The Abia State command just like other commands is putting things together towards ensuring peaceful and credible election.
"In no distant time, we're going to have the signing of Peace Accord with all the political parties and their aspirants.
"This will be another step towards ensuring that there'll be safety for all people both during their campaigns, election period and post-election period".
