96 gradates of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, Abia state were awarded First class hons on Saturday during the 9th convocation ceremony of the University.
Also 1,826 graduants received second class hons upper division, while 2935 graduants were awarded second class lower division, 1,264 grandants got third class while 93 received pass hons bringing the total number of grandants to 6,214.
In his address the visitor to the University President Muhammadu Buhari, charged the graduants to be good ambassadors of the University.
Represented by Didado Kumo from National Universities Commission, President Buhari stated that the challenges of nation building requires Universities in the Country to be totally committed in moulding students to become strong in their intellectual capacity and character.
The President also pointed out that the graduants must exhibit strong intellectual capacity and character required to properly apply skills to the benefits of the human society.
Buhari, urged the University to pursue a great task of character and capacity building of the future leaders of Nigeria.
He vowed that the Federal Government would continue to support the University to system to fulfil its mission and mandate.
He said, "My administration is committed to the education advancement of our nation and will continue to put in places policies and enabling enivronment to promote the properà education of the citizens".
He commended the management of the University for their efforts at mainitaing peaceful and conducive environment favourable for learning.
The Vice Chancellor Prof. Francis Otunta, stated that the University management was focused at the maintaining strong academy program of the University.
He announced that twelve
programs of the University had agained full accreditation during the 2018 Nigerian University Commission.
"All the twelve programmes presented bagged full accreditation with not less than 80% score and above for all, he said.
He lamented that state of the University's infrastructure and physical facilities was hindering its commitment to provide quality education.
The VC appealed to the public and private sector to come to the University's aid.
He said, "There is a crying need for significant infusion of funds for the upgrade of our physical environment, especially when it is realized that this University is among those Universities that started with the disadvantage of not having a take-off grant from the Federal Government.
"Our internal roads are failing as a result of increased population on campus and the use of heavy vehicular equipment".
